You told yourself you weren’t going to finish off that bag of chips.  It’s now the middle of the night and you can’t stop thinking about them.  So you decide to cave in, and have a midnight snack.  You stumble your way into your dark kitchen and feel around on the counter for the chip bag, when suddenly you feel something bump into your hand.  You jump, bang your way to the light switch, and turn it on.  Just as the lights flicker to life you see it out of the corner of you eye, a disgusting brown bug skittering down your counter, but before you can get there, it’s gone.  You’re hoping it’s just a bad dream, but you know it’s not. Ew, Ew, Ew, Cockroaches are in your kitchen.

Probably one of the most widely known and unwelcome pests that people encounter in their homes and businesses is the cockroach.  Cockroaches are typically a dark brown color and around 1 to 2 inches long.  They are a common pest in homes from New York to California, where they dine regularly on poorly contained household trash, leftover pet food, and apparently your chips.

The most common varieties of cockroaches in the U.S. are the American and the German cockroach.  The American cockroach is brown to reddish-brown and can grow to be 2.1 inches in length. The German cockroach is pale brown and usually about an inch long.  Both types are hardy survivors, and typically, where there’s one, there are more.

To help keep your home pest free, make sure all garbage bags and trash cans are sealed tightly to help eliminate food sources.  Pick up or cover uneaten pet food or store it until next meal time, and clean up all food scraps (and chip crumbs) from floors, counter tops, tables, appliances, etc.
