As many schools and libraries encounter bed bugs, from time to time, we thought it was a good time to remind you of some ways to avoid having bedbugs hitch a ride home with your kids.
In this feature from WSAZ TV, you’ll see how some officials are suggesting you curtail the problem.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

  • Learn to spot Bedbugs. Bedbugs are tiny, apple-seed-shaped, reddish-brown bugs that are flat like ticks, only smaller.
  • Check your children’s backpacks and book bags when they return home– give them a scan before they get comfortable on the couch or in their bedroom.  Consider using a handheld garment steamer; this can kill any bedbugs or eggs that may be present on bags.
  • Immediately wash and dry clothing in hot temperatures to ensure that any stowaway bedbugs are not transported into your hampers or closets.
  • If you see signs of bed bugs coming in with your kids, report the problem to the school– and keep reporting it until you get a reasonable response.
  • If you suspect a bedbug infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional promptly. Bedbugs are not a DIY pest, and the longer you wait, the larger the infestation will grow. A trained professional has the tools and knowledge to effectively treat your infestation.
